The last night of this trip is at AfroChic in Diani. We flew one hour back from Samburu to Nairobi and then took another flight from Nairobi to Ukunda in Diani which took 1hr 45mins. Ukunda airstrip is 10mins drive from AfroChic. There are daily flights from Nairobi Wilson to Ukunda with SafariLink as well as flights with fly 540 and Air Kenya. There are also regular daily flights from Nairobi NBO to Mombasa, transfer time is anything from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours, depending on the ferry crossing.
AfroChic is a 10 room “home” overlooking the Indian ocean on the northern section of Diani Beach.
There are 7 sea view rooms, which include a junior suite and an executive suite, and 3 garden view rooms. All the rooms have a large double bed and there are currently no twin rooms however some rooms have a sofa bed. Baby cots are available. 4 of the rooms can connect via an outside verandah if need be. Most of the rooms have a verandah. All the rooms are on the 1st and 2nd floor and there are no wheelchair friendly rooms. The rooms have large bathrooms with showers and some of them have bath tubs. In every room there is a satellite TV, air conditioning, hair dryer and a safe.
It is on a full board basis which includes 3 meals a day. Everything is a la carte and with notice the kitchen can prepare the dish of your choice. Drinks and laundry are not included.
There is 24 hour electricity and free WiFi.
Massages are available in the massage room and they cost approx US$40 for one hour.
The beautiful private gardens have a large free form swimming pool with a jacuzzi section, sunbeds with sun shades and private beach. You relax the day away with a book from the small library or, if you are the active type, there are plenty of activities available:
Deep sea fishing
Dolphin Safaris to Kisite Marine Park and Wasini Island
Wildlife safari in Shimba Hills National Reserve
18 hole golf course
Micro light flights
If you are looking for something that feels like a home away from home then AfroChic is definitely the place for you.
In April there is a planned refurbishment of the bathrooms and decor. This will mean AfroChic will be closed for a few weeks. More details will follow on this blog and at ITB where Stephan, the general manager, will also be joining us. Don’t forget to make your appointment to see us by emailing Stefania on email@example.com or Joel on firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to seeing you there.
Unfortunately this is the last night of our trip. We hope you have enjoyed learning a little more about Sopa Lodges in Kenya and AfroChic, we know we have.
Next week we shall post some photos of the lodges as it has been difficult to add photos whilst on safari.
